MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory – known as CSAIL ­– is the largest research laboratory at MIT and one of the world’s most important centers of information technology research. Our lab is at the forefront of emerging technologies in computer science, wireless and artificial intelligence. CSAIL has its roots in two MIT computing powerhouses: The Laboratory for Computer Science (LCS) and the Artificial Intelligence Laboratory (AI Lab). LCS was founded in 1963 as Project MAC (Multiple Access Computing or Machine-Aided Cognition). The AI Lab was founded as the AI Project in 1959. The two labs merged in 2003 to form CSAIL. CSAIL’s Mission is to invent the future, educate the best students, and conduct long-term fundamental research in computer science. CSAIL’s principal goal is to pursue innovations in information technology that will lead to substantial long-term improvements in the ways people live and work. CSAIL researchers have brought the world countless innovations, such as time-shared computers, RSA public key encryption, bit-map displays, the World Wide Web, and many other ground-breaking technologies that have changed business and industry.

The Music, Perception and Robotics Lab explores the expressive and creative possibilities of electromechanical machines and how they can interact with human musicians. The lab designs, builds, composes for and performs with musical robots. It also conducts psychological research that examines human musical perception and creativity. These efforts are synthesized in the development of software that allows human musicians to improvise with robotic ones.
